Guyan Porter

Guyan Porter is an artist and writer currently based in the South East of England. He set up his first studio in Glasgow in 1994, Organising, exhibiting in and curating artist led projects and multi media arts events. In 1998 he carried out a residency in Russia, going on to South Africa, and has been travelling extensively ever since. Showing work in non arts spaces, he has also worked with major organisations throughout the world.
His practice as an artist incorporates sculpture, installation, architectural intervention, political dialogue and events combining performance, music and visual art. Working in a variety of mediums from photographic portraits, text, neon and food, as well as more traditional materials, his work explores order, belief, information and conflicts between internal and external authorities. It has also involved temporary buildings and performances in strange places.
As a writer he has covered the subjects of art, culture, politics, environmental issues and religion, publishing articles and essays, while writing a book on the evolution of the mind.
In 2005 he established The Edible Construction Company with Chris Biddlecombe and Emilia Telese, to develop large scale public art projects that deal directly with particular environmental issues, as well as utilising the sustainable transfer of products, resources and aid. During the month long build of the Rice Pavilion, The Edible Construction Company’s first major pubic art project, audience figures came to 80,702, and the Pavilion provided a basic meal for over 100,000 children.
